Will you be watching the Super Bowl? I will, mostly so I can see Amanda Gordon and have a reason to eat nachos.

I’m also excited to see Sarah Thomas at work – Thomas will be the first woman to work as a referee at the Super Bowl. A former college basketball player, Thomas began officiating football in 2007. Her appointment to the Super Bowl’s officiating team is part of a micro-trend of breakthroughs for women in professional sports.

Here are some things I’ve been reading this week:

Betty Friedan would be 100 this year. How should we think about her legacy? (New York Times)

This piece dates from 2017, but but it provides some insights into the coup in Myanmar and why Aung San Suu Kyi lost her status as a human rights icon. (The New Yorker)

The appointment by Pope Francis of Nathalie Becquart as an undersecretary of the synod of bishops is one very small – but significant – step forward for Catholic women. (The Guardian)

This COVID-related news is devastating for indigenous Americans. (The Guardian)

Is anyone else doing Duolingo? It’s been a pandemic lifeline for me. And I feel really good about the company’s commitments to making education free and easily available and to diversity.

What are you reading?
